Nature's Fury: Tornadoes, Floods, Hurricanes & Wildfires
While this book focuses on long-term self-reliance, immediate survival during natural disasters requires specific, rapid actions.
Tornadoes
- Warning Signs: Green sky, large hail, loud roar (freight train).
- Action: Basement or interior room on the lowest floor. No windows. Cover your head (helmet/mattress).
- Mobile Homes: GET OUT. Find a sturdy building or lie flat in a low ditch covering your head.
Floods
- Turn Around, Don't Drown: 6 inches of water can knock you down; 12 inches can float a car. Never drive through floodwaters.
- High Ground: Move to higher ground immediately.
- Electrical Hazard: Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
Hurricanes
- Evacuate: If ordered to evacuate, GO. Traffic will be a nightmare, so leave early.
- Shelter in Place: If staying, board up windows (plywood, not tape). Stay in an interior room away from windows.
- The Eye: Don't be fooled by the calm eye. The winds will return from the opposite direction.
Wildfires
- The "P" Words: Preparation (defensible space), Plan (evacuation route), Practice.
- Evacuation: Leave before you see the flames. Smoke can be disorienting and deadly.
- If Trapped: Find a body of water or a cleared area (black/burned area). Lie low to the ground (smoke rises). Cover yourself with a wool blanket or soil.
