A Guide to Emergency Power

Powering Through: A Guide to Emergency Power

Electricity isn't just a luxury; it powers medical devices, communications, and tools.

Generators: The Heavy Lifters

Types

  • Inverter Generators: Quiet, fuel-efficient, "clean" power safe for electronics. (e.g., Honda EU2200i). Best for charging devices and running lights.
  • Open-Frame Generators: Loud, powerful, cheaper. Good for running well pumps or refrigerators.
  • Dual-Fuel: Run on gasoline or propane. Propane stores indefinitely, unlike gas.

Safety

  • Carbon Monoxide (CO): NEVER run a generator indoors or in a garage. At least 20 feet from the house.
  • Backfeeding: NEVER plug a generator into a wall outlet ("suicide cord"). It can kill utility workers. Use extension cords or a transfer switch.

Solar Power: The Silent Alternative

  • Solar Generators (Jackery, EcoFlow, Bluetti): Battery banks with built-in inverters and solar charge controllers. Silent, safe indoors, but limited capacity.
  • DIY Solar: Panels + Charge Controller + LiFePO4 Battery + Inverter. Cheaper and more scalable than all-in-one units.

Battery Standardization

Standardize on one battery type (e.g., AA/AAA Eneloop rechargeables) for all your flashlights and radios. Buy a solar charger for them.
